Getting to know Biggera Waters
The name is said to come from Bigera, the Yugambeh word for the red ironbark tree. Land here was offered for sale in 1883, and a school reserve was set aside on Biggera Creek in 1889. Work started on an aerodrome in 1937, only for the war to halt it, and part of the land was sold in 1953. A bridge at the creek mouth in 1960 opened the northern side to housing, and the state school followed in 1970.
Low-lying homes near the creek mouth and Broadwater should keep batteries and inverters raised and sheltered, and coastal-grade fixings are worth the small extra cost given how close the salt water is.
