Currumbin: a local snapshot
Samuel William Grey was the first European to take up land here, and clearing started in the late 1800s. Subdivisions were advertised from 1904, the first hotel went up in 1910 and the Thrower Drive Bridge opened in 1926. Many houses still date from the 1920s subdivisions. The name comes from the Yugambeh word Garambin, meaning quicksand or a type of pine, and this is Tulgigin clan land.
Steep, leafy hillsides and a mix of 1920s houses, fibro beach homes and high-rise mean shading, roof condition and strata rules all need checking before panels go up.
