About Tweed Heads
Cedar cutters were working the Tweed Valley by 1844, two decades after John Oxley passed through in 1823. Dairying, cane and bananas followed, and the first school opened in 1871. The Boyd Estate went to auction in 1888 and the railway arrived in 1903. Locals called the town Tweed Heads from the early 1900s, though the old name Cooloon, from a Yugambeh-Bundjalung word, wasn't formally dropped until 1965.
A large retired population means plenty of people are home during the day to use solar power as it's made, and homes near the river mouth and coast benefit from corrosion-rated mounting hardware.
