Going solar in Tweed Heads

The Tweed runs from the border at Tweed Heads down the coast to Pottsville and inland along the river to Murwillumbah and Uki, a mix of beach houses, river-flat towns and hinterland acreage.

From the river towns around Murwillumbah to the beach suburbs of Kingscliff, Cabarita and Pottsville, the Tweed sits on the NSW side of the border, so it runs on Essential Energy's network and NSW energy rules.

Tweed Heads is on Essential Energy's network, so your system is designed to Essential Energy's connection rules (typically a 5kW export limit) and NSW feed-in tariffs. We handle the network application for you.

  • Being close to the water, Tweed Heads gets salt-laden sea breezes. We use corrosion-resistant racking, stainless fixings and panels and inverters rated for coastal sites, and we design to the local wind loading.

Tweed Heads: history and local area

Cedar cutters were working the Tweed Valley by 1844, two decades after John Oxley passed through in 1823. Dairying, cane and bananas followed, and the first school opened in 1871. The Boyd Estate went to auction in 1888 and the railway arrived in 1903. Locals called the town Tweed Heads from the early 1900s, though the old name Cooloon, from a Yugambeh-Bundjalung word, wasn't formally dropped until 1965.

The town sits right on the state border, where Terranora Creek meets the mouth of the Tweed River. Around 8,200 people live in the suburb itself, part of an urban area of more than 63,000. The marina, Chris Cunningham Park with its war memorial and Twin Towns Clubs & Resorts are local fixtures. With 14 retirement villages, it is one of the region's main retirement hubs.

A large retired population means plenty of people are home during the day to use solar power as it's made, and homes near the river mouth and coast benefit from corrosion-rated mounting hardware.
