Morayfield: history and local area
George Raff bought land here in 1868 from the failed Caboolture Cotton Company and named it after his home county of Morayshire in Scotland, writing it as Moray Field. The name stuck from 1881. Small dairies and crop farms filled the area until the mid 1980s, when housing took over at a fast pace. Parts of the suburb went under water during the 2010 to 2011 floods.
Morayfield Shopping Centre, opened in 1997 and expanded in 2005, is the main draw, with a train station and bus interchange close by. Three heritage listed sites, including the Oaklands Sugar Mill and the old plantation, recall the farming years. Most homes are low set brick, with some semi rural acreage on the outskirts. Schools include a state high school and Carmichael College, and Brisbane is about 44 km by road.
Low set brick homes usually have simple hip roofs with good access, which keeps installs straightforward, while semi rural lots can fit larger arrays. Flood affected streets should keep batteries and inverters mounted high.
