Burpengary: history and local area
Timber cutters were the first Europeans to make a living here in the 1870s. The name comes from burpengar, an Aboriginal word for the place of the green wattle. A provisional school opened in November 1876 and became a state school in 1909. St Eugene College followed in 1989 and Burpengary State Secondary College in 2015. Traditionally a blue collar area, it has since drawn more families and professionals.
Burpengary Creek is the main waterway, and the suburb sits between the Bruce Highway and Oakey Flat Road. Locals have a train station, Burpengary Plaza and a library that was refreshed in 2016. The regional aquatic centre has a 50 metre pool, and the equestrian centre and AFL fields, once used by the Brisbane Lions for preseason games, add to a strong sporting side. Brisbane is around 39 km by road.
Planned estates here sit beside older homes and horse properties, so a good assessment looks at roof size and shading first, then whether a shed or paddock offers a better spot for panels.
