Priestdale: history and local area
Surveyors named Priest's Gully in the early 1860s, though nobody is sure who the priest was. By 1912 a 1,861 acre grazing property called Priestdale sat on the western branch of Tingalpa Creek. In 1916 it was cut into 50 farms of 20 to 40 acres and sold as fruit-growing land. Priestdale became a locality in 1979 and a suburb in 1991, and the Chung Tian Temple was built in bushland in 1992.
Only 160 people live in Priestdale. Rural residential blocks fill the north and north-east, while the south and west remain undeveloped, with Daisy Hill Conservation Park reaching into the middle and providing important koala habitat. The Chung Tian Temple on Underwood Road has a museum, gallery, tea room and meditation spaces. Underwood Park offers sports fields, barbecues and a wedding venue.
Rural residential lots beside koala bushland can have tall trees close to the house, so it is worth comparing roof and ground-mount options rather than clearing vegetation.
