Slacks Creek: history and local area
The creek, and later the suburb, took its name from the Slack family, who ran cattle here before closer settlement. Its Aboriginal name, Mungaree, is said to mean place of fishes. A provisional school opened in 1873 while the area was part of the Shire of Tingalpa. The name became official in 1971, the area was bounded as a locality in 1979, and it became a suburb in 1991.
Slacks Creek sits about 20 metres above sea level, with the creek feeding the wider Logan River catchment and the Pacific Motorway along most of the eastern edge. Queensland's first IKEA moved here from Rochedale South in 2006. In 2018, Mabel Park State School and Mabel Park State High School had about 1,600 students between them. More than 10,000 people live here.
Homes close to the creek and its low banks should keep batteries and inverters off the ground, and households with daytime occupants can make good use of solar without needing storage straight away.
