Shailer Park: history and local area
Francis and Catherine Shailer arrived in 1866, and the couple later ran the first citrus orchard in southern Queensland. Local farmers tried cotton first, then sugar. The Kimberley Park estate was developed in 1973, and the Shailer name was attached to the area as a district in 1971 before it became a suburb in 1991. Logan Hyperdome opened in 1989 on the old Wild Waters site.
Shailer Park is hilly, stretching from the Pacific Motorway up to forest and bushland in the north, with Kimberley Park making up the north-east corner. It is mainly a middle-class residential suburb. Logan Hyperdome is the regional shopping centre, with the bus station and a library that opened in 1998. Three schools serve local families: Shailer Park State High, Shailer Park State School and Kimberley Park State School.
Hillside homes can face almost any direction, so roof orientation and shade from bushland to the north should be checked before deciding on panel layout and whether a split east and west array makes sense.
