Rochedale South: history and local area
The name dates to the 1880s and comes from the Rochedale homestead of the Roche family, who settled in 1868. In 1952 the Gill family ran a poultry farm and piggery here. Everything changed in 1967 when the land became the first sewered estate in the region. Strathlands shopping centre opened in 1970, the first state school in 1974, and Rochedale South was split from Rochedale in August 1979.
Underwood Road along the north marks the line between Logan and Brisbane, and the Pacific Motorway runs down part of the west. The district was once known for red soil good for crops. Today about 15,200 people live here, mostly on estate blocks. Rochedale Shopping Village, formerly Strathlands, is the local hub, with two state primary schools nearby and Rochedale Rovers FC playing at Underwood Park.
Many estate homes here date from the late 1960s and 1970s, so older wiring and switchboards are common, and estate blocks laid out in one go tend to have similar, easy to plan roof layouts.
