Beenleigh: history and local area
John Davy and Frank Gooding planted sugarcane here in the 1860s and named their plantation after the family estate back in Devon. William Fryar surveyed the town in July 1866, and the first mill went up a year later. By 1885 the district had 29 more mills, and the railway arrived that same year. Dairying followed in 1889 and an abattoir in 1952, before Brisbane and the Gold Coast grew out to meet it from the 1980s.
The old sugar town sits close to where the Logan and Albert rivers join, with the Pacific Motorway alongside and the Gold Coast line running through the centre. The heritage-listed Rum Distillery and the Beenleigh Historical Village, with its 20 old buildings, keep the past on show. Three shopping centres, a Mitre 10 MEGA, two theatres and Logan River Parklands serve locals, and newer high-rise buildings now share the skyline.
A mix of older homes and newer multi-storey buildings means roofs vary a lot here, so it pays to size each system to the actual roof area and how much power the household uses during the day.
