Bribie Island: history and local area
The Joondaburri people called the island Yarun. Matthew Flinders landed in 1799, and a short lived mission ran from 1890 to 1892. Concrete forts went up between 1939 and 1943 to guard the bay during the war. Everything changed in 1963, when a road bridge opened from Sandstone Point, opening the island to permanent residents and holidaymakers alike.
Around 34 km long, Bribie has a surf side facing the ocean and calm sandy beaches along Pumicestone Passage. Most of the island is national park or plantation forest, with the park alone covering about 56 square kilometres. Housing is concentrated at the southern end in Bongaree, Woorim, Bellara and Banksia Beach, along with the library, shops, clubs and a golf course.
Island homes sit in constant sea air, so marine grade fixings and regular panel cleaning help output. Homes that are occupied through the day can use more of that power as it is made.
