Browns Plains: history and local area
Browns Plains was a recognised place name by 1840, and Cobb and Co coaches were passing through by 1863. A small school opened around 1878 but shut in 1902 during drought. Tobacco was the main crop until the 1950s. Growth picked up in the 1980s, with new schools in 1982, 1983 and 1985, and Grand Plaza opened in 1994 before a $55 million expansion in 2006.
Grand Plaza on Browns Plains Road is the big drawcard, doubling as a bus terminus, with the Logan West library nearby since 2003. The cinema there closed in 2024 after 30 years. Scrubby Creek is the main waterway, feeding Slacks Creek and then the Logan River. There are 13 parks, Koala Park and Waller Park among them, plus a state primary on Mayfair Drive and a state high school on Ivor Street.
Former tobacco country on flat ground means most homes get clear sun across the roof, and families with long air conditioning hours can use a battery to stretch daytime solar into the evening.
