Hillcrest: history and local area
Hillcrest started out as a corner of Browns Plains and became a separate place name in June 1987. The Wineglass Water Tower on the hilltop was finished in 1984, though an ambulance station had already opened on the site in 1982. A temporary fire station ran from 1983 until the permanent Logan West station opened in Orr Court in 1986, with the Browns Plains police station following there in 1988.
Part of the suburb sits on a hill, and on top stands the Wineglass Water Tower, holding a million litres and lit up at night so it can be seen from kilometres away. Johnson Road, the Mount Lindesay Highway, the interstate railway and Coronation Road mark the edges. The Logan West Community Centre on Wineglass Drive has a hall for up to 410 people, plus a rotunda and water garden.
Houses on the hill's slopes may face east or west rather than north, which suits a split array that spreads generation across the morning and afternoon.
