Marsden: history and local area
Marsden began life as the Kingston Park Estate within Kingston. The first house went up in the 1930s, and in 1944 the land was cut into small farms for ex-servicemen and post-war migrants. Phones and power arrived in the late 1940s, but piped water only came in the 1970s. The suburb took the name Marsden in May 1976, honouring Violet Marsden of a local pioneer family, and its industrial estate opened in 1981.
Scrubby Creek runs along the northern edge, roughly parallel with the Logan Motorway, and its banks carry parks, walkways and the East West Bikeway. Most of the suburb is now housing estates, with industry tucked into the south-west. Marsden Park Shopping Centre opened in 1985, and the library on Chambers Flat Road followed in 2006. The suburb also has a Cambodian Buddhist temple, a mosque and a Catholic church.
Homes built on the old post-war farm lots often sit on generous blocks, and the light industrial estate in the south-west has broad roofs where daytime machinery use lines up well with solar output.
