Waterford West: history and local area
John Cameron put land at Waterford North and South up for auction in April 1885, but houses only started appearing in the 1970s. A drive-in opened in 1974, the same year two homes were swept away in the floods while the bridge held. Waterford was divided in 1978, and Waterford West became a suburb in its own right in 1987, the year Marsden State High School opened.
The Logan River runs down the eastern side and part of the south, and Tygum Lagoon sits beside Waterford Plaza near the road bridge. Marsden State High School is here, and by 2024 it was the biggest high school in Australia by enrolment, with more than 4,000 students. Waterford West State School has run since 1976 and includes a special education program. Kingston Road carries traffic north.
With the Logan River and Tygum Lagoon close by and a history of flooding in 1974, households here should site batteries and switchgear above likely flood levels.
