Ferny Grove: history and local area
Ferns along the valleys gave this place its first name, Ferny Flats, swapped for Ferny Grove in 1916 to avoid mix-ups with a New South Wales town. A school opened in 1875, and trains arrived in 1918. For years the area was mainly industrial, but houses spread in the late 1970s, the line was electrified in 1979, and the high school opened in 1980.
Trains on the Ferny Grove line terminate here, about 15 km north-west of the city. Close to 5,900 people live on 3.8 square kilometres, with eight parks taking up almost 13 per cent of the suburb. Kedron Brook once drew picnickers, Cedar Creek runs nearby, and an old tip is now a hill with sports fields. The Brisbane Tramway Museum opened in 1980.
Most homes went up from the late 1970s onward, so they usually have sound roofs and room for a meter board upgrade. A battery lets households use daytime solar after dark instead of exporting it cheaply.
