Arana Hills: history and local area
Frederick and Elizabeth Patrick bought the first land here in 1878, and for decades it stayed forest and small farms. In 1956 Willmore and Randell launched Camden Park, the first modern subdivision in the old Shire of Pine Rivers, and the modest prices sold blocks quickly. The Arana Hills name was gazetted in December 1962. It was thought to mean welcome, though it later turned out to mean the moon.
Part of the informal Hills District, the suburb backs onto Bunyaville Forest Reserve about 14 kilometres north-west of the city. Arana Hills Plaza, with Kmart and Coles, is the local shopping hub, and the council library on Cobbity Crescent has been there since 1976. Parks include Bandicoot Gully, Camden Park and Leslie Patrick Park. Severe storms in 2008 caused enough damage to bring out the SES.
Homes bordering Bunyaville bushland can lose roof sun to tall gums, and the 2008 storm damage is a reminder that a battery backup circuit is worth considering for keeping essentials running.
