Ferny Hills: history and local area
Schools tell the growth story here. Ferny Way State School opened in January 1970 and took the Ferny Hills name in 1973, and Patricks Road State School followed in 1977. For years the Australian Woolshed, a farm and wildlife attraction, was a local drawcard. It operated until 2006, was then knocked down, and its land became the Woolshed Grove housing estate.
Samford Road runs through this Hills District suburb, about 16 kilometres north-west of the city. Houses fill the eastern side, while the western part falls within Samford Conservation Park, so bush is never far away. Two state primary schools serve families, at Illuta Avenue and Patricks Road, and older kids head to Ferny Grove State High School next door.
Newer homes in Woolshed Grove often have cleaner rooflines than older hillside houses, while blocks near the conservation park may need a shade check before choosing panel count and battery size.
