Petrie: history and local area
Thomas Petrie built his Murrumba homestead on the Pine River in 1858 and later subdivided land for a town called North Pine. The railway station took the Petrie name in 1911, and the suburb followed. The big change came in 1957, when a paper mill opened on a 250-hectare former dairy site, turning a small farming town into a residential area. The North Pine School of Arts dates from 1889.
The North Pine River runs along the south and Yebri Creek the south-east, with old pine plantations and farmland now being built on. The town centre stretches along Gympie Road, Dayboro Road and Anzac Avenue. The University of the Sunshine Coast has a campus on the old mill site, and Petrie station connects to Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Kippa-Ring.
New housing on former plantation and farmland usually comes with modern, unshaded roofs, making it simple to design a well-sized system from the start.
