Strathpine: history and local area
During the Gympie gold rush of the 1860s, Strathpine grew as an offshoot of North Pine, now Petrie. Sugar mills and rum distilleries operated here late in the 1800s. Queensland Railways chose the name in the 1880s, joining the Scottish strath, a valley, with the Pine River. An army camp and airfield in World War II brought a population surge, and the Strathpine Centre opened in 1983.
Gympie Road runs through the middle with the North Coast railway alongside, giving two stations, Strathpine and Bray Park. Strathpine Centre doubles as the bus interchange. Many businesses and government offices are based here, including Pine Rivers district offices of the City of Moreton Bay. The old Pine Rivers Shire Hall is heritage-listed, and Pine Rivers Park sits on Gympie Road.
Homes from the 1960s and 1970s estate boom often have simple rooflines, and plenty of local businesses and offices along Gympie Road suit daytime solar use.
