Lawnton: history and local area
Blacksmith Stephen Lawn owned the land here before Queensland Rail bought it and named the spot Lawnton. Carl Leis donated land for the cemetery in the 1880s, and the first rail bridge over the North Pine River was finished in 1888, the same year St Thomas' Anglican Church was dedicated. A wartime airfield operated in the east, and Lawnton State School opened in 1967.
Rivers frame the suburb, with the North Pine River to the north and the South Pine River and Four Mile Creek to the south-east. Leis Park has barbecues and a boat ramp onto the North Pine. Lawnton station is on the Caboolture line. The area east of Gympie Road, once called Wyllie, joined Lawnton in 1989, and the cemetery on Norfolk Avenue is also known as Mary Bray Park.
With two rivers and a creek nearby, low-lying homes should plan for flooding, which means mounting batteries and inverters well off the ground and above known flood levels.
