Kallangur: history and local area
Kallangur comes from the Kabi word kalangoor, described as a goodly or satisfactory place. In 1855 the land passed from Mrs Griffin of Whiteside to a son of Scottish migrant Thomas Petrie. Cobb & Co coaches travelled the old Gympie Road through here, and the suburb grew in the early 1900s as the main road route to the Redcliffe Peninsula, until the Hornibrook Bridge opened in the 1930s.
With more than 21,700 residents, Kallangur sits between the North Coast railway on the west and the Bruce Highway on the east, with Anzac Avenue as the main road. Kallangur station opened in 2016 on the Redcliffe Peninsula line. The memorial gate, bronze statue and gardens outside North's Leagues and Services Club are well known locally. Three primary schools serve the area.
Newer homes built to meet growth corridor demand often have roofs ready for a full array, and a battery can help busy households cover evening peaks.
