Tanah Merah: history and local area
Tanah Merah was first counted as part of Slacks Creek. The McBride family, who had come to Brisbane from Penang in Malaysia, bought the land and gave it its name, and the Place Names Board made it official in 1971. The biggest change came between 2001 and 2006, when land west of Drews Road was turned into a housing estate and the population grew sharply.
Set on a hill with a northern spur, Tanah Merah looks down over the north bank of the Logan River. Murray's Road is home to the largest known stand of the rare Austromyrtus gonoclada tree, with fewer than 300 known anywhere. Tansey Park has a sports oval and a council boat ramp, and the local shopping plaza sits at Sambit Street and Tansey Drive. Schools are in Loganholme and Shailer Park.
Homes on the hill catch good sun but may face in many directions, while estate houses west of Drews Road, built in the early 2000s, often have simple roofs well suited to a straightforward array.
