Murwillumbah: history and local area
Timber-getters came to the Tweed in the 1840s, but the town site was not surveyed until 1872 and became a village on 31 March 1879. The railway arrived in 1894 and a municipality followed in 1902. On 15 September 1907, remembered as Red Sunday, fire destroyed most of the business district, which was rebuilt in brick within a year.
Murwillumbah sits on the Tweed River in the south-eastern foothills of the McPherson Range, with Mount Warning (Wollumbin) close by. Many buildings are Art Deco, and the main streets have cafes, clothes shops and antique shops. Flood levees protect the town centre, the heritage-listed station marks the start of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, and the Tweed Regional Gallery is nearby. Sugarcane is the main industry outside tourism.
In a river town protected by flood levees, it makes sense to mount batteries and inverters well above the ground floor, and older Art Deco era buildings may need roof and switchboard checks before panels go on.
