Going solar in Tumbulgum

The Tweed runs from the border at Tweed Heads down the coast to Pottsville and inland along the river to Murwillumbah and Uki, a mix of beach houses, river-flat towns and hinterland acreage.

From the river towns around Murwillumbah to the beach suburbs of Kingscliff, Cabarita and Pottsville, the Tweed sits on the NSW side of the border, so it runs on Essential Energy's network and NSW energy rules.

Tumbulgum is on Essential Energy's network, so your system is designed to Essential Energy's connection rules (typically a 5kW export limit) and NSW feed-in tariffs. We handle the network application for you.

  • Low-lying pockets of Tumbulgum sit inside council flood mapping. Where it matters we mount inverters and batteries above the flood planning level and keep isolators easy to reach.
  • Plenty of Tumbulgum properties are on acreage, which opens up ground-mounted arrays, sheds and larger systems. Rural feeders also see more outages, so battery backup is popular here.

Tumbulgum: history and local area

Cedar getters were on the Tweed by 1842, and land selectors followed in 1866, when a river port called Tweed Junction was set up. Through the 1880s it was the main town in the valley, until the railway made Murwillumbah the commercial centre. New bridges and bypasses in 1936, 1973 and 2002 steadily took through traffic away, and the village was evacuated during the 2022 floods.

The village sits where the Rous River meets the Tweed, and its Bundjalung name may mean 'meeting of the waters'. Several heritage buildings were built from local red cedar, and the Tumbulgum Hotel is heritage-listed. A heritage trail set up in 2013 takes 40 to 50 minutes to walk, and Stotts Island Nature Reserve protects 77 hectares of lowland subtropical rainforest. Fishing and boating are popular.

After the 2022 floods, anyone adding a battery at this river junction should think about mounting it high and choosing a system with backup power that can keep essentials running when the grid goes down.
