The line reached Murwillumbah in 1894, and the station is now the starting point of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail. The suburb forms part of the Murwillumbah township in Tweed Shire.

It uses the 2484 postcode, sits in the Tweed state electorate and the federal Division of Richmond, and is about 129 km south-south-east of Brisbane.
As part of a river town on the Tweed, flood planning matters here, so keeping batteries and inverters raised and choosing gear that can be isolated quickly in an emergency is a smart move.
