Going solar in Uki
The Tweed runs from the border at Tweed Heads down the coast to Pottsville and inland along the river to Murwillumbah and Uki, a mix of beach houses, river-flat towns and hinterland acreage.
From the river towns around Murwillumbah to the beach suburbs of Kingscliff, Cabarita and Pottsville, the Tweed sits on the NSW side of the border, so it runs on Essential Energy's network and NSW energy rules.
Uki is on Essential Energy's network, so your system is designed to Essential Energy's connection rules (typically a 5kW export limit) and NSW feed-in tariffs. We handle the network application for you.
- Plenty of Uki properties are on acreage, which opens up ground-mounted arrays, sheds and larger systems. Rural feeders also see more outages, so battery backup is popular here.

Uki: history and local area
Timber cutters chasing red cedar, along with dairy farmers, were the first settlers around Uki, and early 1900s photos show the surrounding hills almost bare of trees. When dairying was rationalised in the 1960s, many farms switched to beef cattle. The name may come from Bundjalung words for bandicoot or a small water plant, though one uncited story links it to 'UK 1', a grading mark on cedar sent to Britain.
Uki sits in the Tweed Valley near Mount Warning, with Mt Uki and The Sisters close by and Clarrie Hall Dam about 10 km away. The village has the Old Butter Factory, a primary school, post office, general store, bakery, pharmacy and cafes. The Mount Warning Hotel burned in February 2013 and reopened in mid-2015. Murwillumbah is about 15 minutes away by road.
In a valley ringed by Mt Uki, The Sisters and Mount Warning, some homes lose direct sun earlier in the afternoon, so careful shading checks and panel placement matter more here than on the flat coast.
