Ormiston: history and local area
The Koobenpul people lived along this stretch of coast. A brickworks started on Hilliards Creek in 1852, and Louis Hope bought land the following year, building Ormiston House between 1858 and 1865 as the hub of a sugar estate. He named it after his family's home village in Scotland, replacing the older name Woojanness. The railway station arrived in 1889.
Hilliards Creek runs along part of the western border and Empire Point sits on the coast, with the Cleveland line slicing through the south. Ormiston House is now a museum open for tours, and nearby heritage sites include the old fellmongery, St Andrew's Church and an early creek bridge. Ormiston College opened in 1988, and the state school dates back to 1872.
