Going solar in Piggabeen
The Tweed runs from the border at Tweed Heads down the coast to Pottsville and inland along the river to Murwillumbah and Uki, a mix of beach houses, river-flat towns and hinterland acreage.
From the river towns around Murwillumbah to the beach suburbs of Kingscliff, Cabarita and Pottsville, the Tweed sits on the NSW side of the border, so it runs on Essential Energy's network and NSW energy rules.
Piggabeen is on Essential Energy's network, so your system is designed to Essential Energy's connection rules (typically a 5kW export limit) and NSW feed-in tariffs. We handle the network application for you.
- Plenty of Piggabeen properties are on acreage, which opens up ground-mounted arrays, sheds and larger systems. Rural feeders also see more outages, so battery backup is popular here.

Piggabeen: history and local area
Dairy farming once dominated Piggabeen, and both the Old Piggabeen Hall and the local school were established in 1919. The name is said to mean 'Valley of the Palms', linked to the Bangalow palms that grow here and to the Bundjalung word bigibin. Campbell Hill, once known as Mount Campbell, is the local high point.
Piggabeen Creek runs along a valley that leads north-west toward the Queensland border. The land here is part of the old Tweed Volcano shield, the same ancient system centred on Mount Warning. Today the area is mainly acreage homesites and small hobby farms, and 327 people were counted in 2011, about 35 metres above sea level.
On acreage and hobby farms there is often room for a ground-mounted array away from shady trees, and sheds, pumps and workshops add daytime loads that soak up solar output well.
