Going solar in Duranbah

The Tweed runs from the border at Tweed Heads down the coast to Pottsville and inland along the river to Murwillumbah and Uki, a mix of beach houses, river-flat towns and hinterland acreage.

From the river towns around Murwillumbah to the beach suburbs of Kingscliff, Cabarita and Pottsville, the Tweed sits on the NSW side of the border, so it runs on Essential Energy's network and NSW energy rules.

Duranbah is on Essential Energy's network, so your system is designed to Essential Energy's connection rules (typically a 5kW export limit) and NSW feed-in tariffs. We handle the network application for you.

  • Plenty of Duranbah properties are on acreage, which opens up ground-mounted arrays, sheds and larger systems. Rural feeders also see more outages, so battery backup is popular here.

Duranbah: history and local area

Duranbah's best-known business, Tropical Fruit World, was established in 1972 as a working farm that doubles as a tourist attraction. The locality sits on Tweed land traditionally owned by Ngandowal and Minyungbal-speaking Bundjalung people. At the 2011 census only 262 people lived here, so it remains one of the smaller pockets of Tweed Shire.

Set about 65 metres above sea level, Duranbah looks out over the Tweed Valley and the Pacific Motorway. It is roughly 21 km south of Tweed Heads and 104 km from Brisbane. The locality votes in the Tweed state electorate and falls in the federal Division of Richmond, with Tropical Fruit World its main drawcard.

Elevated rural blocks overlooking the valley usually catch sun from early morning, and working farms with pumps, cool rooms and sheds can use a lot of daytime power, which suits larger solar systems.
