Going solar in McDowall
Brisbane's west takes in leafy riverside suburbs like Indooroopilly, Kenmore and Chapel Hill, the Centenary suburbs, and hillier, tree-lined streets around The Gap, Ashgrove and Ferny Grove where shading needs careful planning.
Brisbane covers everything from Queenslanders with tin roofs and tight inner-city lots to big brick homes in the southern and western suburbs. Every roof is different, which is why we measure and design each one on site.
McDowall is on the Energex network. Most homes can export up to 5kW per phase on a standard connection, and newer dynamic connections allow more. We size your inverter to get the most from those limits and lodge the Energex application for you.

McDowall: history and local area
The council wanted to call this area Annand, after Colonel Frederick Annand, but locals preferred McDowall, the name already chosen for the new school, honouring early settler Colonel John McDowall. McDowall State School opened in January 1975 with 36 pupils and six teachers, and the suburb name was approved that same year. By 2018 the school had nearly 1,000 students.
Roughly 7,600 people live in McDowall, which covers 4.2 square kilometres about 12.8 km by road north of the CBD. McDowall Village on Beckett Road, anchored by a Drakes supermarket, handles everyday shopping. Several bus routes, including the Great Circle Line, connect to Chermside, Aspley and the city. High school students go to Craigslea, Everton Park or Albany Creek.
Houses in a suburb that took shape from the mid 1970s usually have simple pitched roofs, and a battery lets a household shift daytime solar into the evening when air conditioning and cooking loads peak.
