Going solar in Surfers Paradise

The central Gold Coast takes in the high-rise strip from Broadbeach to Main Beach, the canal homes of Bundall, Benowa and Isle of Capri, and family suburbs like Ashmore, Nerang and Carrara.

Over half of Gold Coast houses already have rooftop solar, so a lot of our work here is batteries, upgrades and fixing tired systems, alongside new installs in growth areas like Coomera, Pimpama and Ormeau.

Surfers Paradise is on the Energex network. Most homes can export up to 5kW per phase on a standard connection, and newer dynamic connections allow more. We size your inverter to get the most from those limits and lodge the Energex application for you.

  • Being close to the water, Surfers Paradise gets salt-laden sea breezes. We use corrosion-resistant racking, stainless fixings and panels and inverters rated for coastal sites, and we design to the local wind loading.

Surfers Paradise: history and local area

James Beattie farmed near the Nerang River as the first European settler, and in 1877 Johan Meyer bought land and ran a ferry from 1880 to 1928. By 1889 the place was known as Elston. Jim Cavill opened the Surfers Paradise Hotel in 1925 and pushed for a catchier name, which became official on 1 December 1933. Kinkabool, ten storeys high, kicked off the high-rise era in 1959.

A continuous surf beach runs down the eastern side, while the Nerang River curls around the north-west past canal islands such as Chevron and the Isle of Capri. Cavill Avenue is the heart of the nightlife, the Q1 tower dominates the skyline and five G:link light rail stations serve the strip. Housing is mostly high-rise apartments, with canal estates further back from the beach.

Most residents here live in high-rise towers, so rooftop solar is a building-wide project, while owners of canal houses back from the beach can run their own systems with fixings chosen for salty river and ocean air.
